Neighbourhood Car Share
Why share cars?
The average car is used for less than 1hr every day
The average cost of car ownership in May 2022 is estimated to be £2000, even if you never use it
The ability to easily share cars in your neighbourhood means:
overall fewer cars on the road, leading to reduced emissions, safer and quieter streets
car owners can generate extra income from loaning their vehicle
its much more possible for people to either cut down from 2 cars to 1, or take the plunge and go car-free, saving money in the long-term
How Would a Car Share Scheme Work?
There are many ways to potentially run a scheme like this, however we are currently proposing to use the template set up by ShareOurCars, set up and running successfully in Oxford. Under this model, a third-party app called Hiyacar is used, which takes care of the organisation and payment side of things easily and conveniently. If you want to rent your car out, you list it (a bit like AirBnB!) and set your hourly rate. If you want to borrow, you can simply browse to see what is available for you to use. It also allows for the ability to set up trusted groups, say just the road you live in, or a group of friends.
The ShareOurCars website gives plenty of detail and examples, but the key thing is that you can tweak it to suit you best!
I'm interested! What do I need to do to get involved?
We are currently running a survey to gauge interest and to understand how people in Rugby might use a car sharing scheme. Please help us by completing this, which will also allow you to register your interest and make sure you know what is happening.
We will then aim to run a webinar later in the year, and have something up and running by early 2023.
